The natural-finish block displays Henckels's famous logo beneath the scissors slot in the front. --Fred Brack Dull cutlery is dangerous cutlery. One of the easiest ways to maintain sharp edges on your fine cutlery is to store the knives in a block. An added benefit is that your knives are conveniently ready and waiting for the next time you need to carve a roast or julienne some veggies.

Wusthof Gourmet 18-Piece Knife Set with Storage Block

Wusthof Gourmet 18-Piece Knife Set with Storage Block Review

Wusthof Gourmet 18-Piece Knife Set with Storage Block Feature

  • Laser-cut high-carbon steel blade with stain-resistant alloy
  • Precise tapering from grinding and polishing procedure
  • Full, seamlessly encased triple-riveted tangs
  • Synthetic traditional-style handles
  • Comes packed in a 17-slot oak block
Representing Wüsthof’s Gourmet series of knives, this block set features less expensive versions of the knives in the manufacturer’s Classic series. Knives in the set include an 8-inch cook’s knife, an 8-inch carving knife, a 6-1/2-inch santoku, an 8-inch bread knife, a 6-inch sandwich knife, a 4-1/4-inch tomato knife, a 4-inch utility knife, a 3-inch paring knife, six 4-1/2-inch steak knives, a 6-inch kitchen fork, kitchen shears, and a 9-inch sharpening steel. Everything fits within the 17-slot rubber-footed oak block. Although the blades are still made of high-carbon steel with a stain-resistant alloy, the difference in the Gourmet series is that the blade is a thinner quality metal and is cut by a precision laser instead of by hand. The blade still has an ideal shape as it is ground and polished by computer to ensure perfect tapering from tip to bolster. Full tangs extend through the synthetic traditional-style handles, which are triple-riveted for strength. These knives are dishwasher-safe but handwashing is recommended to preserve the edges on the blades. The Gourmet series is an excellent alternative for those who want to own quality Wüsthof cutlery but are on a budget. --Cristina Vaamonde

Wusthof 8001 Under-Cabinet-Swinger Knife Storage Block

Wusthof 8001 Under-Cabinet-Swinger Knife Storage Block Review

Wusthof 8001 Under-Cabinet-Swinger Knife Storage Block Feature

  • Stores knives off the counter surface
  • Swings in and out from under the cabnet with a touch of a finger
  • Holds 8 knives and a steel
  • Mounts with only 3 screws under the cabinet
  • Made of oak; 10-1/4 inches long, 7-1/4 inches wide, 3-1/2 inches high
When counter space is at a premium, this clever knife block stores cutlery underneath a kitchen cabinet. It mounts easily with a drill and three screws (included) that secure the block's "spacer" (a 1-1/4-inch-thick oak block) to the cabinet's bottom. Between the spacer, which ensures handles are comfortably lower than the cabinet, and the actual block are two steel plates connected to a pivoting device that permits the block to be rotated 360 degrees. Thus, when not needed, the block can be swiveled in any direction so knife handles don't protrude. When knives are needed, a push of a finger brings their handles from beneath the cabinet. Solidly made of oak, the block has eight slots for knives with blades up to 10 inches long and a ninth slot for a sharpening steel. Magnetic strips hold knives securely in their slots. The block measures 10-1/4 inches long, 7-1/4 inches wide, and, including the spacer, 3-1/2 inches high. --Fred Brack The Swinger block fits underneath the kitchen cupboard. It stores 8 knives and a sharpening steel. The block is on a swivel that easily mounts under your cabinet and swings out from under the cabnet so you can retreive your knives. A magnet inside of the block holds the knives securely.
